Smart device-based detection of atrial fibrillation: Opportunities and challenges in the emerging world of digital health

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a growing epidemic in the aging world population [1]. In many patients AF can be asymptomatic leading to an underestimation of its true prevalence and incidence. Conceptually, AF is increasingly considered the consequence of an atrial cardiomyopathy that results from the combined effects of genetic predisposition, risk factors and co-morbidities [2]. Once AF occurs, it causes changes in the structure and function of the atria (atrial remodelling), which promote AF re-initiation and maintenance [3].
