When you are a leader, there is a certain amount of gravitational pull toward loneliness. You’re often privy to inside information, and it’s hard to know whom to trust. Sometimes you are even geographically separated. The corner office is a real thing, and it isn’t accessible without going through a gatekeeper who assures that only the right people get through. Then, you add to that the truth that most people who want to meet with you want something. If you are the decision-maker and your word and approval can make things happen, then you are always being sought after, even chased. Do you see how it happens? All of these things and more, like gravity, pull us toward seclusion. It’s easier to. And yes, there are times when solitude is necessary. We all need alone time to think and ponder. But too much time alone is usually unhealthy. The great king Solomon - supposedly the wisest man who ever lived and a remarkable businessman to boot - said: “in a multitude of counselors there is safety.” He was entirely right about that.
