Schirmer test results: are they associated with topical or systemic medication? Ocul Surf. 2019 Nov 14;: Authors: Hampel U, Schuster AK, Nickels S, Schulz A, Lackner KJ, Münzel T, Wild PS, Beutel M, Schmidtmann I, Pfeiffer N Abstract PURPOSE: To test whether Schirmer test (ST) results are associated with topical or systemic medication and to evaluate the distribution of tear fluid quantity in a 3-min and 5-min ST. METHODS: The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based, prospective, observational cohort study in Germany. ST was assessed in a sub-cohort of 1,999 participants. ST was performed under topical anesthesia for 5 min (ST-5) or of 3 min (ST-3). Anthropometric factors, systemic diseases, use of systemic and eye medications were recorded. We used multivariable quantile regression analysis to assess the influence on ST measurements. RESULTS: The length of wetting of the Schirmer strips for ST-5 was 23.2 ± 9.31 mm for right and 22.9 ± 9.0 mm for left eyes. In ST-3, the measurements were 20.0 mm in right and 19.1 mm in left eyes. The clinical cut off of 10 mm for ST-5 corresponded with an 8 mm cut off for ST-3. There was an association of smaller ST-5 measures with male sex, higher age, socioeconomic status and season (all p

Abstract Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) is an available tumor biomarker mainly for detecting ovarian cancer. However, it is unknown whether it can be a novel indicator for diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of serum HE4 as a novel biomarker for DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We enrolled 236 patients with T2DM and 82 healthy individuals. Serum HE4 was detected by ARCHITECT i2000 and compared between T2DM patients and healthy controls. The relationships between various variables and HE4 were analyzed by univariate or multivari...

This study is to identify the circular RNA (circRNA) expression profile that is functionally related to pancreatic islet β-cell autophagy and their potential regulation mechanisms in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM rat model was constructed by administration of high-fat and high-sugar diet. β-cells were isolated from islets by flow cytometry. CircRNA expression profile in β-cells was detected by circRNA microarrays, and the differentially expressed circRNAs were identified and validated by qRT-PCR. MicroRNA (miRNA) target prediction software and multiple bioinformatic approaches were used to construct ...

In this study, sitagliptin nanoparticles (sizes ranging from 210 to 618 nm) were developed. The bioadhesion properties of the nanoparticles, as well as the swelling of the nanoparticles on the mucus membrane aided in sustained drug release. The pattern of drug release was in accordance with the Peppas model. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy demonstrated that there were no significant interactions between sitagliptin and chitosan. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed an absence of drug peaks due to the fact that the drug was present in an amorphous state. Mucoadhesive nanoparticles wer...

Publication date: Available online 10 December 2019Source: Current Opinion in Colloid &Interface ScienceAuthor(s): Mimmi Eriksson, Agne SwerinAbstractForces exerted at surfaces and interphases due to formation of gaseous (air or vapor) bridges describe the extreme liquid-repellence in superhydro- and amphiphobicity. The neighboring research areas oγAf liquid capillary bridges and that of interactions between hydrophobic surfaces are highly valuable reference systems. We review recent findings with particular focus on the three-phase contact line and surface forces. While macroscopic contact angles (>150°),...

Authors: Giulini SM, Stagnitti F Abstract There is no doubt that postgraduate education and all "professional development activity" is in crisis, not only in our country but in all of Europe. The crisis is on one hand due to a lack of resources which has been evident for more than a decade, and on the other hand due to factors such as organization, culture, and education. Many of the chief medical disciplines such as internal medicine or general surgery, have been literally crushed and replaced by a myriad of subspecialties that have undermined the original unified character of the main disciplines 1. The...

CONCLUSIONS: Reported complication rates associated with femoral VCD implantation are low. However, in some cases VCD implantation may account for severe complications including limb losses. Therefore, an adequate patient selection is necessary to detect those cases at higher risk for complications. PMID: 31814376 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: The presence of one or more prognostic factors as well as the various risk prediction models can guide selection of ACS patient subgroups for which a prophylactic CEA should or should not be offered. Decisions to offer prophylactic CEA should weigh in factors like surgeon's experience and hospital expertise/volume. Asymptomatic patients not expected to live long enough to benefit from the procedure should not be considered for CEA, but should be offered best medical treatment.
