Comparison of Excimer Laser Versus Femtosecond Laser Assisted Trephination in Penetrating Keratoplasty: A Retrospective Study

ConclusionNon-mechanical EXCIMER trephination seems to have advantages regarding postoperative corneal astigmatism and visual acuity compared with FEMTO trephination, especially in KC. A bigger sample size and longer follow-up are needed to evaluate the long-term impact of EXCIMER and FEMTO trephination on postoperative topographic and visual outcomes.

Authors: Stefano GB, Esch T, Kream RM Abstract The relaxation response derives its health benefits by reestablishing "normal" equilibria between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. Recent work suggests that this behavioral training provides positive effects on mitochondrial bioenergetics, insulin secretion, and reductions in pro-inflammatory and stress-related pathways. We have previously contended, however, that correlative associations of relaxation training with positive changes in gene expression in selected biological systems are strongly suggestive of adapti...

ConclusionsThe atypical clinical presentation of some CGD patients can make genotype –phenotype correlation with DHR flow data challenging. Genetic testing, while useful for confirmation of diagnosis, can take several weeks, and in some patients does not provide a conclusive answer. However, NADPH-oxidase-specific protein flow assessment offers a rapid alternative to identificatio n of the underlying genetic defect in cellular subsets, and can be utilized as a reflex test to an abnormal DHR flow. Further, it can provide insight into correlation between oxidative burst relative to protein expression in granulocytes and monocytes.

Wallace HayesAbstractBIA 10–2474 (3-(1-(cyclohexyl(methyl)carbamoyl)-1H-imidazol-4-yl)pyridine 1-oxide) is a novel fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor developed by BIAL for the treatment of medical conditions which would benefit from enhanced levels of endogenous anandamide (AEA) such as pain disorders. During a Phase I clinical trial one subject died after receiving BIA 10–2474 and others displayed neurological signs....

[Automated Cell Counting Using "Deep Learning" in Donor Corneas from Organ Culture Achieves High Precision and Accuracy]. Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2019 Dec;236(12):1407-1412 Authors: Heinzelmann S, Daniel MC, Maier PC, Reinhard T, Böhringer D Abstract BACKGROUND: Human corneal grafts from organ culture need to have more than 2000 endothelial cells/mm2 to be suitable for transplantation. Measurement of the endothelial cell density is complicated by invisible cell borders in phase contrast microscopy, as well as by limited areas for counting due to folds in the Descemet membrane of the swol...

Authors: Reisdorf S Abstract Machine learning and artificial intelligence are mostly important if data analysis by knowledge-based analytical methods is difficult and complex. In such cases, combined analytical and empirical approaches based on AI are also meaningful. The development and validation of several clinical parameters for the Corvis ST are a concrete example of this approach. In this article, the development of three screening parameters is described. It is shown how these developments lead to clinical solutions that can be beneficial for detecting clinical and subclinical keratoconus as well as for glau...

AbstractThe innervation of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) is not sufficiently documented. This is a drawback since pathologies of the LHBT are a major source of shoulder pain. Thus, the study aimed to characterize structurally and molecularly nervous elements of the LHBT. The proximal part of 11 LHBTs was harvested intraoperatively. There were 8 female and 3 male specimens. Age ranged from 66 to 86  years. For structural analyses, nervous elements were viewed in the transmission electron microscope. For molecular characterization, we used general neuronal markers including antibodies against neurofilament a...

CONCLUSION: Analysis of data detected a misdiagnosis of ectasia in 20 patients (26 eyes), a finding of 2.0% (20 of 1000) of referred cases that did not satisfy the diagnostic criteria of corneal ectasia. These conditions are considered a contraindication to corneal crosslinking and there is usually no benefit to topography-guided PRK or intrastromal corneal rings. It is important that clinicians recognize the clinical findings of these conditions and differentiate from true keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, or ectasia after laser vision correction. CONCLUSIONS Alport syndrome patients without classical ophthalmological findings have smaller crystalline lens diameter and lower lens power. These signs may support the diagnosis of Alport syndrome. Ophthalmologists should not only seek for the known classic signs, but also the parameters of the crystalline lens, especially if genetic testing is not available.
