Repaired coarctation of the aorta, persistent arterial hypertension and the selfish brain

It has been estimated that 20 –30% of repaired aortic coarctation (CoA) patients develop hypertension, with significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Vertebral artery hypoplasia (VAH) with an incomple...

Abstract OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases and their association with polypharmacy in elderly people at the University of the Third Age (Portuguese acronym: UnATI). METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical study with 121 elderly patients. The prevalence ratio, Pearson's Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used as measures of association. RESULTS: At the mean age of 68.3, most elderly had at least one cardiometabolic disease (82.6%), of which hypertension was the most prevalent (71.1%), and consumed prescription drugs of continuous use (92.6%). Almost h...

Authors: Yu C, Zhan X, Liu C, Liao S, Xu J, Liang T, Zhang Z, Chen J Abstract BACKGROUND This retrospective study aimed to investigate the risk factors associated with the recurrence of L5-S1 disc herniation after percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal discectomy (PETD). MATERIAL AND METHODS There were 484 patients L5-S1 disc herniation who underwent PETD who were divided into the recurrence group (n=46) and the non-recurrence group (n=438). Transforaminal endoscopic approaches included modifications of the Yeung endoscopy spine system (YESS) (the intraforaminal intradiscal approach) and the transforaminal endoscop...

RARITAN, NJ, March 28, 2020 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson &Johnson today announced the VOYAGER PAD study met its primary efficacy and principal safety endpoints, demonstrating the XARELTO® (rivaroxaban) vascular dose (2.5 mg twice daily) plus aspirin (100 mg once daily) was superior to aspirin alone in reducing the risk of major adverse limb and cardiovascular (CV) events by 15 percent in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) after lower-extremity revascularization, with similar rates of TIMI[1] major bleeding. VOYAGER PAD is the only study to show a significant benefit...

CONCLUSIONS: The lowered BP threshold, 130/80 mmHg, by the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline, in conjuncture with 10-year risk calculation largely driven by age, would increase pharmacological treatment preferentially in very old individuals, while increasing prevalence and uncontrolled rate mostly in younger subgroups. Adoption of lower BP cutoff to the KSH guideline would require validated cardiovascular disease risk assessment tools accounting for risk distributions specific to Korean population. Authors: Nishibe T, Nishibe M, Akiyama S, Nukaga S, Ogino H, Koizumi J, Dardik A Abstract BACKGROUND: To quantitatively evaluate edema of the lower legs in patients with saphenous varicose veins, and to determine the association between leg edema and venous hemodynamics of the lower legs. METHODS: The data of 140 patients with saphenous varicose veins visiting Eniwa Midorino Clinic from April 2018 to November 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Body composition values, including mass index (BMI), extracellular water / total body water (ECW/TBW) of each leg, and skeletal muscle mass of each leg, were measured by...

Purpose of review This review provides a risk-stratified and evidence-based management for subsets of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients in the first five years from disease onset. Recent findings Cardiopulmonary disease remains the primary cause of mortality in SSc patients. Morbidity and mortality in SSc-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension have improved with combination treatment, in either an upfront or sequential treatment pattern. Traditional therapies for interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) have targeted those with clinically significant and progressive ILD with immunosuppression. New data suggest a possib...

AJP Rep 2020; 10: e113-e117 DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1709186Detailed clinical and pathological features of placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) complicated by preeclampsia (PE) are unknown. A 39-year-old nulliparous woman was referred at 19 weeks gestation. Ultrasound examination identified a fetus with severe growth restriction (−2.8 SD) and a markedly thickened placenta with many cystic structures suggestive of PMD. At 21 weeks, the patient developed severe hypertension (180/95 mm Hg) with marked proteinuria and an elevated serum soluble fms-like tyrosine-kinase-1 (sFlt-1) level (47,000 pg/L). The pregnancy was ...
