Characteristics of Corneal Endotheliitis among Different Viruses by in Vivo Confocal Microscopy.

Conclusion: ICVM can assist in diagnosing endotheliitis. The results demonstrate that changes in the cornea were not different among the various viruses except for owl's eye morphology, the lengths of the subbasal nerves and Langerhans cell densities. Abstract BACKGROUND: Rapid identification of human herpesviruses from lesion swabs is necessary for timely initiation of antiviral treatment, especially with infections involving neonates and immunocompromised individuals. The aim of the study was to investigate the results of an in-house polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for herpesviruses in patients with symptoms suggestive for a herpesvirus infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this single center retrospective study the results of 3677 lesion swab specimens tested for human herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and 2) and varicella zoster vir...

ConclusionThe results of this large, nationally representative longitudinal study suggest that common viral infections are not significant risk factors for common mental disorders. The association of CMV with a lower risk of generalized anxiety disorder warrants further investigation.

Authors: Mohamed AA, Lu XL, Mounmin FA Abstract Esophageal candidiasis (EC) is the most common type of infectious esophagitis. In the gastrointestinal tract, the esophagus is the second most susceptible to candida infection, only after the oropharynx. Immunocompromised patients are most at risk, including patients with HIV/AIDS, leukemia, diabetics, and those who are receiving corticosteroids, radiation, and chemotherapy. Another group includes those who used antibiotics frequently and those who have esophageal motility disorder (cardiac achalasia and scleroderma). Patients complained of pain on swallowing, difficu...

Study (data from 1968 to 2016) reports that compared with earlier years of the study, rates in 2016 were higher for congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus, and varicella zoster virus, but lower for rubella.

In this study, the results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for viral agents were evaluated in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples taken from patients with CNS infection. CSF samples taken from 1185 patients between 2010 and 2017 were tested for the presence of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 2, Varicella Zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus ve enterovirus by PCR in Dokuz Eylul University Hospital. Tests were performed according to the clinicians' orders and results were evaluated retrospectively. The number of tests performed were 1038 for HSV, 882 for adenovirus, 865 for e...

Conclusion: PCR evidence of infection with herpes group viruses was found in one-third of patients with hypertensive anterior uveitis; CMV being the most common pathogen. The PCR-positive group generally responded well to a combination of antiviral and anti-glaucoma treatment. PMID: 31697590 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract The Francophone Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (SFGM-TC) organizes annual workshops in the attempt to harmonize clinical practices among different francophone transplantation centers. Here, we report our recommendations regarding the prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV) and hepatitis B virus infection after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation in adult patients.
