Does crushing up and mixing prenatal vitamins into shampoo really help hair?

I learned via your book the interesting fact that the hair we see and feel is not alive, so that got me to thinking about previously hearing some folks rave about crushing up prenatal vitamins and mixing it into their shampoo. Given the hair is dead, I don’t imagine it is making much use of this added nutrition, yet people still seem to be seeing a benefit. What gives? The Beauty Brains respond: Hi Huang! Now, on to your question… It’s interesting how adding a specific descriptive term can make a statement more plausible. Everyone has heard that vitamins are good for hair so prenatal vitamins must be even better, right?  Wrong!  The practice of adding crushed vitamins to your shampoo is a waste of money for three reasons. 1. (Most) Vitamins do nothing when applied to hair. It’s true that vitamins are essential for the healthy growth of hair when properly metabolized by your body. But once the hair grows out it is dead and rubbing vitamins on top of it does nothing to help it grow better or to improve its health. (There are a few exceptions: Vitamin E does have some moisturizing benefits and pro-vitamin B5 can help thicken hair. More on that in a second.) 2. The vitam...
