Diagnosing bipolar disorder: where have we come from and where are we going

In spite of the changes to the DSM-5, including the addition of DMDD and further refining the classification of bipolar disorder, clinicians still struggle with how to best diagnose bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. We will review the history of diagnosing bipolar disorder in children and adolescents from the past 3 decades and present recent advances in assessment and differentiation from mood dysregulation from the perspectives of neuroscience, clinician decision making, and evidence-based assessment.
