EP.79The impact of ventilation on non-ambulatory patients with DMD

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe progressive muscular dystrophy caused by mutations in the DMD gene, leading to the absence of a functional dystrophin protein. During disease progression patients develop respiratory decline, which leads to the need for ventilation, either non-invasive or invasive, in their late teens or early twenties. Also the ability to cough becomes more compromised during the course of the disease. This has a huge impact on daily life and is a burden for both patients and families.
