Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia in the general population. In western countries with aging populations, atrial fibrillation poses a significant health concern, as it is associated with a high risk of thromboembolism, stroke, congestive heart failure, and myocardial infarction. Thrombi are generated in the left atrial appendage, and subsequent embolism into the cerebral circulation is a major cause of ischemic stroke. Therefore, patients have a lifetime risk of stroke, and those at high risk, defined as a CHA2DS2-VASc2 (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age>75 years, diabetes mel...

AbstractAge-related metabolic and renal changes predispose older people to an increased risk of diabetes mellitus and diabetic kidney disease, respectively. As the prevalence of the ageing population is increasing, because of increased life expectancy, the prevalence of older people with diabetic kidney disease is likely to increase. Diabetic kidney disease is associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes and increased costs to healthcare systems. The management includes promotion of a healthy lifestyle and control of cardiovascular risk factors such as hyperglycaemia, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Older people a...

AbstractCOVID-19 is a viral disease due to the infection of the novel Corona virus SARS-CoV-2, that has rapidly spread in many countries until the World Health Organization declared the pandemic from March 11, 2020. Elderly patients and those affected by hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions are more susceptible to present more severe forms of COVID-19. These conditions are often represented in dialytic renal end-stage patients. Moreover, dialysis patients are more vulnerable to infection due to suppression of the immune system. Growing evidences, although still supported by f...

We report a case of ANCA-associated vasculitis coexisting with cholesterol emboli. A 76-year-old woman was diagnosed with ANCA-associated interstitial pneumonitis. She rapidly developed progressive glomerulonephritis, purpura, and peripheral sensory nerve disorder. A kidney biopsy revealed that renal dysfunction was caused by vasculitis of the interlobular arteries and cholesterol emboli. A skin biopsy revealed that purpura was caused by cholesterol emboli. Glucocorticoid and statin therapies were administered. Thereafter, the renal function and other symptoms improved and stabilized. The representative symptoms of ANCA-as...

CONCLUSIONS: Preeclampsia as well as early-onset and late-onset PE all represent risk factors for adverse cardiovascular events later in life. Early-onset PE is associated with a higher burden of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity compared to late-onset PE. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. COVID-19 occurs with symptoms like fever, cough, myalgia, fatigue, muscle weakness, and impairment in other important bodily functions [1]. As a result of the clinical course of COVID-19 infection, rapidly developing acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS) requires intubation and mechanical ventilation (MV) [2]. Comorbid diseases like aging, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, etc. along with ARDS were reported to be risk factors for death in patients with COVID-19 [3].
