Characteristics and prognosis of patients with significant tricuspid regurgitation.

CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-to-severe or severe TR is associated with a high risk of hospitalization for RHF and death at 4 years, and a low rate of surgery. Idiopathic TR is associated with worse outcome than other aetiologies. PMID: 31558358 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of transthoracic echocardiography for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis (IE) to provide a basis for the better treatment of IE. From October 2016 to October 2018, 87 consecutive patients with IE at our hospital were selected for this study. All the patients were subjected to transthoracic echocardiography. The morphology, structure, activity, and closure of the patients’ heart valves were observed for vegetation identification, and the size, number, location, morphology, and echo intensity of vegetation, as well as degree of valve involvement, were determine...

This article reviews the clinical application of stress echocardiography, including dobutamine, semisupine bicycle, treadmill, and leg-positive pressure for VHD patient management, and focuses on the current consensus regarding the use of stress echocardiography in VHD. Stress echocardiography is safe and should be encouraged, especially in heart valve clinics, to understand the complex mechanism in asymptomatic patients.

Publication date: Available online 28 May 2019Source: Canadian Journal of CardiologyAuthor(s): Julien Ternacle, Nancy Côté, Laura Krapf, Annabelle Nguyen, Marie-Annick Clavel, Philippe PibarotABSTRACTValvular heart calcification is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in those receiving hemodialysis therapy, and it is associated with poor prognosis. Furthermore, progression of valvular heart disease (VHD) and structural valve deterioration of bioprosthetic valves are faster in these patients. Mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of VHD are similar between patients with and wit...

We present a series of imaging findings in CHD patients who have successfully undergone simultaneous surgical replacement with bioprosthetic valves of 1 to 4 heart valves. The surgical decision in these patients was based on a multimodality cardiovascular approach, including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance. The patients had uncomplicated postoperative courses, significant symptomatic relief from heart failure symptoms, and there was no cardiovascular mortality. Early recognition of CHD with a multimodality approach may improve outcome, even in complex cases. Bioprosthetic v...

Abstract Valvular heart diseases are one of the most frequent causes for heart failure. Degenerative diseases of the aortic and mitral valve as well as a dysfunctional tricuspid valve disease result in a worse clinical outcome if severe. Minimal-invasive, surgical and/or catheter-based structural heart disease (SHD) interventions have recently seen a dramatic increase. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for severe aortic stenosis (AS) is a disruptive technology, and next generation devices and careful patient selection will minimize limitations of TAVI such as paravalvular leak, conductance disturbance...

Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE:EW) said today that it made a pair of strategic bets on the structural heart space, paying $35 million for the right to acquire Corvia Medical and paying an unspecified amount for some of mitral valve repair device maker Mitralign‘s assets. Tewksbury, Mass.-based Corvia is developing an interatrial shunt to treat heart failure by creating a small opening between the left and right atria to lower blood pressure in the left atrium and lungs. The device has CE Mark approval in the European Union and a pivotal U.S trial aimed at winning a nod from the FDA is under way, Edwards said. &ldquo...

ConclusionsECMO can be used as a bridge to heart valve or septal defect surgery in severely decompensated patients. Through recovery of end-organ function, ECMO may allow surgical correction of structural heart disease in patients considered inoperable or convert a salvage situation to an elective operation.
