S. pasteuri remains an extremely infrequent cause of human infection to date, namely bacteremia in an individual suffering acute myeloid leukemia, catheter-associated urinary tract infection in a patient receiving chemotherapy and endocarditis within a case series without specific clinical information. A...

We describe a 65-year-old man who presented with 'aches and pains' localized to the lower extremities, and was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We hypothesize that this case represents an atypical presentation of AML with an immune-mediated necrotizing-like myopathy as a possible paraneoplastic manifestation of the disease, which improved after initiating chemotherapy. Our patient received a full course of 7 + 3 chemotherapy with cytarabine and daunorubicin. Proximal leg weakness and pain improved markedly following this treatment, establishing a temporal relationship between the possible paraneop...

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) requires refined risk stratification tools to drive decisions concerning effective therapeutic strategies. Here, genome-wide screening was carried out for identifying miRNA molecules capable of predicting treatment outcome in AML patients based on the TCGA dataset. We identified miR-340 as a prognostic factor for selecting treatment between chemotherapy and allogeneic transplantation (allo-HSCT). In multivariable analyses, low miR-340 expression independently predicted reduced OS (HR = 2.07, P = 0.004) and EFS (HR = 1.909, P = 0.01) independent of other well-known prognostic factors. Meanwhile,...

In solid tumors and hematological malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia, some chemotherapeutic agents, such as anthracyclines, have proven to activate an immune response via dendritic cell-based cross-priming of anti-tumor T lymphocytes. This process, known as immunogenic cell death, is characterized by a variety of tumor cell modifications, i.e., cell surface translocation of calreticulin, extracellular release of adenosine triphosphate and pro-inflammatory factors, such as high mobility group box 1 proteins. However, in addition to with immunogenic cell death, chemotherapy is known to induce inflammatory modific...

Conclusion: In this patient, the complication of relapsed AML may have contributed to the rare extension of VRE into the CNS space. Screening for patients at risk of AML with CNS involvement and addressing coagulopathy and risk of infection may help mitigate morbidity. Bilateral administration of subdural daptomycin bolus into the subdural space was tolerated and possibly contributed to the patient's neurological improvement during an extended hospital course. In this report, we examine the preclinical development of glasdegib, its pharmacology and the clinical investigation that demonstrated its safety and efficacy, resulting in its approval. Additionally, we highlight ongoing investigation and future applications of this therapy. PMID: 31584572 [PubMed - in process]

Purpose of review The purpose of this review is to outline Egyptian experience of nonengraftment haploidentical cellular therapy [microtransplantation (MST)] for patients with refractory acute myeloid leukemia. Recent findings The use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor primed halo-identical MST appears to be a biologically active therapy in patients with refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML), especially in patients received less than four previous chemotherapy lines, fludarabine-free previous chemotherapy, response naïve and young age patients. Summary Refractory AML is still challenging. MST is promis...

Abstract Immunological principles based on Treg cell self-stabilization and the discovery that tumors are capable of evading the body's defense mechanism have led to more effective immuno-oncology therapies. Hence, next generation immunotherapy can only be effective if researchers have an in-depth understanding of the function and regulation of Treg cells in antitumor immunity combined with the discovery of new immunity targets. This can enhance clinical efficacy of future and novel therapies and reduces any adverse reactions arising from the latter. This review of the literature discusses tumor treatment strategi...
