Primary antiphospholipid syndrome in a hemodialysis patient with recurrent thrombosis of arteriovenous fistulas.

CONCLUSION: Thrombophilias are inherited or acquired predispositions to vascular thrombosis and have been associated with thrombosis of the arteriovenous fistula. Patients on hemodialysis with recurrent vascular access thrombosis and presence of thrombophilia should be evaluated about the need for anticoagulant therapy with a vitamin K antagonist. Authors: Silva MAFS, Dechichi P, Limirio PHJO Abstract Childhood obesity is a considerable worldwide health problem and a major risk factor for several chronic diseases. Fat rich diets result in altered serum levels of lipids, cytokines and hormonal factors, which influence skeletal acquisition and promote microstructural and mechanical behavior changes in bone, especially to bone quality and quantity. However, the possible longterm implications of high-fat diets in childhood are controversial. Despite not fully understood, multiple signaling pathways which support bone tissue homeostasis are altered under hyperlip...

Authors: Scheffer-Rath ME, Boot AM Abstract Vitamin D is important for skeletal growth, bone mineralization and dental health. Vitamin D deficiency is reported in many countries, may have several causes and can cause rickets in children. A guideline with recommendations of vitamin D supplementation to prevent nutritional rickets was published recently. The vitamin D receptor is present in many cells of the body including cells of the immune system. Many studies have been published on associations between vitamin D deficiency and extra skeletal effects, mainly without proof of causality in intervention studies. This...

The association between preoperative vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and the development of more severe postoperative hypocalcemia is still unclear. Objectives. To evaluate the effect of preoperative VDD on severity of hypocalcemia in patients with hypoparathyroidism following thyroidectomy. Methods. Patients who developed acute hypoparathyroidism after total or completion thyroidectomy, defined as postoperat...

Authors: Orrù B, Szekeres-Bartho J, Bizzarri M, Spiga AM, Unfer V Abstract The ongoing worldwide pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), raised the urgency to address knowledge gaps and to establish evidence for improving management and control of this viral infection. Throughout a keen analysis of the World Health Organization (WHO) most updated data, a gender-specific difference in the occurrence of infection was determined, which seems to correlate with patient's vitamin D status. Therefore, our purpose is to provide insights into the nutritional importance of vitamin D for its immunomodulatory e...

This study is aimed to evaluate sCD138 and FLC levels as diagnostic biomarkers of HCV-related MC with B-NHL. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 35 HCV-MC-NHL patients, characterized for the specific type of cryoglobulins, and 25 healthy blood donors (HBD) as negative control. Serum sCD138 levels were determined using ELISA kits specific for human sCD138. Serum FLCs were assessed by means of the turbidimetric assay. RESULTS: We found that serum levels of sCD138, as well as FLCs, were significantly higher in patients than in HBD (p

Authors: Hirayama T, Morioka H, Fujiwara H, Iwamoto K, Kiyozuka T, Takeo H, Ikeda K, Kano O Abstract The frequency and risk of embolism by Lambl's excrescences (LEs) remain unclear. We herein report an autopsy case of LEs that caused cardioembolic stroke. A 74-year-old man with colon cancer was hospitalized for ischemic stroke. His D-dimer levels were elevated. Thus, a diagnosis of ischemic stroke with Trousseau syndrome was made. At the autopsy, we found LEs in the aortic valves and thromboembolism of the brain blood vessels. This finding demonstrated that fibrin clots had adhered to the LEs because of coagulation...

Authors: Hasegawa Y, Arinuma Y, Tanaka S, Tono T, Tanaka T, Muramatsu T, Kondo J, Matsueda Y, Hoshiyama T, Wada T, Takayama Y, Yamaoka K Abstract A 40-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus taking consecutive oral corticosteroids developed a high-grade fever and disorder of consciousness following acute rhinitis. Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) was found and isolated from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid by culture, leading to a diagnosis of meningitis. The prevalence of H. influenzae type b (Hib) infections has decreased due to routine immunization. As a result, the prevalence of invasive non-Hib, inc...
