TB). Emerging data suggest that interferon gamma (IFNG) and its receptor IFNGR1 may be involved in the risk of TB. METHODS: A total of 636 TB patients and 608 healthy controls were selected. The association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and TB was estimated by logistic analyses adjusting for age, gender and smoking status. SNPs genotyping was done by using the improved multiplex ligase detection reaction (iMLDR). RESULTS: The IFNG rs1861494 allele C was related to an increased risk for TB (OR = 1.25, 95%CI: 1.06-1.48; P = 0.009). Compared with TT genotype, CT (OR = 1.28, 95%CI: 1.01-1.63; P = 0.040) and CC (OR = 1.51, 95%CI: 1.04-2.19; P = 0.031) were also risk factors for TB. Conclusions: Applying a predictive model with clinical and laboratory indices can facilitate the differential diagnosis of TPE from SMPPE in children, which seems helpful when a microbiologic or histologic diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis could not be established.

Diagnosis of pediatric tuberculosis is notoriously difficult. We investigated the additional yield of blood culture in hospitalized children in Vietnam. Among 554 enrolled clinically suspected patients, an additional 6 cases were diagnosed, while the incremental cost per case was USD500. Addition of blood culture is therefore not recommended for our total patient population, but may be considered in specific groups.

We present the case of a 30-year-old Bissau-Guinean man with HIV-2 infection known for 16 years, irregularly treated, admitted with two weeks of fever, diarrhoea and cutaneous lesions. Examination revealed multiple subcutaneous nodes, Molluscum contagiosum-like lesions, generalized lymphadenopathy and painful palpation of the left iliac fossa. ConclusionsThe rate of helminthic co-infection is predominantly high than that of intestinal protozoa. Single parasitic co-infection was more common than double or multiple co-infections. Both body mass index and mid-upper arm circumference anthropometric parameters revealed greater risk of undernutrition in tuberculosis patients. Thus, screening and prompt treatment of parasites in tuberculosis patients and a support of nutritional supplementation for malnourished tuberculosis patients should be further studied which might enhance the disease treatment and minimize the risk of its complexity.
