IOM Report Details Strategy for Monitoring Safety of Childhood Immunization Schedule

A review of the available evidence underscores the safety of the federal childhood immunization schedule, which recommends the timing and number of vaccines children should receive by specific ages, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. Should signals arise that indicate the need for investigation of the schedule’s safety, however, the report offers a framework for conducting research using existing or new data collection systems. The Vaccine Safety Datalink, a database of health information on more than 9 million people, is the best available tool for exploring questions about the immunization schedule, the report says. The report also points to newer, larger data collection systems in development that hold promise for being able to compare unvaccinated children or children immunized on alternate schedules to vaccinated children with even greater statistical power.
