Short and long term effects of menopause

The average of the menopause is 50 and with increasing longevity could be considered to be a midlife event. Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of the menopause and affect up to 85% of women. Starting in the perimenopause, they usually are present for less than five years, but some women will continue to flush beyond the age of 60 years. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) is a chronic condition and has been estimated to affect 1 in 2 women. The major chronic systemic diseases are: cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, dementia and cognitive decline.
