Editorial: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Autoimmune Diseases: A Pathway in Common?

The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) increased significantly in the last decade. A rare condition at the time Kanner (1942) initially described it, ASD has now become a public health issue with great social and financial burdens. In 2018, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated autism ’s prevalence at 16.8 for every 1,000 (1:59) children by age eight, affecting 26.6/1,000 boys and 6.6/1,000 girls. These numbers represent an increase of approximately 150% between 2000 and 2014.
