The silence of sickle cell disease

(Children's Hospital Los Angeles) Silent strokes are a common symptom of sickle cell disease, though they can be debilitating. John Wood, MD, PhD, of Children's Hospital Los Angeles recently showed that silent strokes may be caused by decreased oxygen delivery to a part of the brain called the white matter.
