Abstract #58: First-in-Class Neuromodulation Therapy in Subjects with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Two-Year Safety and Efficacy

Introduction: Despite the availability of multiple pharmaceutical and targeted biological drugs for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), many patients exhibit intolerability or inadequate clinical response. Modulating innate anti-inflammatory neuro-immune pathways through electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve may represent a novel, nonpharmacological means of treating RA and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. We recently reported a 12-week proof-of-concept study with an implanted neuromodulation device, showing reduction in the DAS28-CRP disease activity score, with concomitant reductions in TNF - α and IL-6 levels (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, 2016.
