This study was designed to explore the mechanisms of DEX in the propofol-induced neuronal injury in rat hippocampus.Materials and methodsRat hippocampi were treated with propofol, and then neuronal injury, neuronal apoptosis, PSD95 and apoptosis-related protein expression in CA1 region were measured after DEX administration and/or ant-miR-34a. miR-34a expression was detected using RT-qPCR, while the binding of miR-34a and Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) was identified with dual luciferase reporter gene assay, and the activation of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway was detected. Additionally, hippocampal neurons were cultured in vitro and treate...

My anesthesiology rotation doesn’t start in a couple of months, but I’m interested in the specialty. The issue is that I work the best when my role is well-defined and I have certain goals in the day to accomplish. With supervisory roles I’m worried that the work would be less-defined and I would have a lot of downtime where I would have to search for productive things to do. Can anyone explain what their day-to-day is like if they are in a supervisory role? What responsibilities do you have... What is the day-to-day life of an anesthesiologist on 2:1 or 4:1 supervision?

Although I was never a huge Kobe Bryant fan myself (Chicago native who always got defensive about the Michael Jordan comparisons), I was still pretty shocked about his passing. He was close to me in age and I could still always appreciate his amazing accomplishments and the fact that he was adored by millions across the globe. He also seemed to have many talents outside of basketball that he was just starting to delve into. It is of course even more sad that his daughter (along with other... Kobe Bryant

This study aimed to determine and compare clinical efficacies and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels between IPI and IANB.Materials and methodsIANB was randomly selected for mandibular premolar anesthesia on one side of 40 patients, whereas IPI was locally administered to the contralateral premolar. Pulpal anesthesia, pain during injection and extraction, patients ’ satisfaction, and complications were assessed from 30 patients. Gingival crevicular fluid from ten patients was collected for PGE2 quantification by ELISA.ResultsOf 30 patients, 18 preferred IPI after injection due to significantly faster mean onset of pulpal...

In this study, we examined the role of molecular signaling in the PVN in mediating the capsaicin-induced ERR and sympathetic activation. Bilateral PVN microinjections were performed in rats under anesthesia. The ERR was elicited by infusion of capsaicin into the cortico-medullary  border of the right kidney. The reflex was evaluated as the capsaicin-induced changes in left renal sympathetic nerve activity and mean arterial pressure. Blockade of angiotensin type 1 receptors with losartan or inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme with captopril in the PVN abolished the c apsaicin-induced ERR. Renal infusion of caps...

AbstractPurpose of reviewCardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of maternal death and cases of cardiovascular death are often associated with failure to provide timely risk-appropriate care. This review outlines considerations for creation of a team focused on the care of women with CVD during pregnancy and beyond.Recent findingsImproved outcomes for women with complex medical or obstetric conditions managed by a multidisciplinary care team inspired national guidelines advising the creation of a Pregnancy Heart Team for women with CVD in pregnancy. The recommendations from the European Society of Cardiology prov...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo provide a brief summary of the progress of enhanced recovery over the last 5 to 10  years and set out what the future might hold for such programmes.Recent FindingsThere has been significant progress in the adoption of enhanced recovery programmes across multiple surgical specialities. However there is still difficulty in sustaining a target of>  80% compliance, which has been identified through research as the optimal level to observe best patient results. With increasing interest in perioperative medicine and prehabilitation, more focus is being put into enhanced recovery progra...
