Cortical Thickness and Volume Reductions in Young Adults with Current Suicidal Ideation

Research in brain structural abnormalities of young adults with suicidal ideation may inform clinical interventions to prevent suicide. 36,000 individuals die from suicide annually (Nature, 2014),  it is the 2nd leading cause of death among individuals ages 15-24 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013), and is associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) (Bridge et al., 2006). Risk of attempting suicide among depressed individuals may be related to cortical structural abnormal ities (Peng et al., 2016).
