Emergency of fungemia cases caused by fluconazole-resistant Candida auris in Beijing, China
Recent reports in this Journal have documented the emergence of Candida auris disease in various parts of the world.1, 2 C. auris is an emerging fungal pathogen, which was first described in 2009 in Japan.3 Recent reports highlight ongoing challenges due to significant patient mortality, organism misidentification, high rates of multidrug resistance, and a high potential for nosocomial horizontal transmission.4 C. auris can often be misidentified as C. haemulonii and many other fungal species in conventional diagnostic laboratories using phenotypic and biochemical methods.
