Establishment and operation of a third party virus-specific T-cell bank within an allogeneic stem cell transplant program

Viral infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality following haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The herpesviruses cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are the most frequent viral infections requiring treatment in the 1st year post-allogeneic stem cell transplant. However, standard treatment options are limited with a handful of effective anti-viral drug therapies available, all associated with treatment-limiting toxicities, significant cost, and the potential need for prolonged and/or recurrent treatment often in the inpatient setting.
