Is suicide risk a predictor of diagnosis conversion to bipolar disorder?

The prevalence of bipolar disorder range from 1% to 7.5% in epidemiological studies (Moreira et al., 2017; Jansen et al., 2011). The rate of suicide attempts and completed suicide is exceedingly high in bipolar disorder. A recent systematic review showed that the rate of suicide attempts spans 25% to 50%, and that 8% to 19% of patients with bipolar disorder will complete suicide (Latalova et al., 2014). In addition, the authors showed that the main risk factors for suicide include a younger age of onset of the illness, history of past suicidal behavior, family history of suicide acts, comorbid borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders, and hopelessness (Latalova et al., 2014).
