Decreased peripheral TNF alpha (TNF- α) mRNA expression in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia

Abnormalities in cytokine production have been implicated in schizophrenia. Among the compendium of cytokines studied in schizophrenia, the pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α) has been shown to be dysregulated in both post-mortem brain (Pandey et al., 2018) and peripheral blood (Francesconi et al., 2011; Pandey et al., 2015; Tian et al., 2014), although negative findings have also been reported (Dean et al., 2013; Erbagci et al., 2001; Fillman et al., 2014). Yet, no s tudy to our knowledge has examined TNF-α in individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
