Addiction and schizophrenia: A translational perspective

Schizophrenia, a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome that affects nearly 1% of the population and includes positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms (Andreasen, 2000), is associated with a variety of co-occurring substance use disorders (Buckley et al., 2009). The Epidemiologic Catchment Area survey showed that individuals with schizophrenia have a high rate of substance (e.g., alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine) use disorders – nearly 5 times the rate seen in the general population (Regier et al., 1990).
