The Effect of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation on Psychiatric Symptoms among Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Diarrhea and Functional Constipation: An Open-Label Observational Study

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID), with 11.2% of the global population suffering from the disease (Lovell et al., 2012). It is often a lifelong disorder that affects patients ’ quality of life, both socially and psychologically. The relationship between IBS and psychiatric disorders seems to be bi-directional. Individuals with IBS have a twofold higher risk of comorbid depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Conversely, 25-30% of patients with depression, 10-45% of p atients with anxiety are reported to develop IBS (Lee et al., 2015; Pinto-Sanchez et al., 2015; Sibelli et al., 2016).
