Specifically, skills are needed to collect, analyze and manage disease and risk factor data so that this information can be used for decision making. It is estimated that Tanzania needs 225 epidemiologists (1 per 200,000 population) but currently has less than 20% of these, most of which are located at the national level. In order for Tanzania to meet its obligations for core surveillance and response, as specified in the International Health Regulations (IHR), well-trained field epidemiologists are needed. These surveillance and response capacities are needed to manage and plan HIV and AIDS, TB, malaria and other communicable and non-communicable disease programs, as well as to evaluate public health programs to inform, improve, and target appropriate health interventions.
