Childhood Stress and Adversity is Associated with Late-Life Dementia in Aboriginal Australians

This study examined the validity of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) in a community sample of older Aboriginal Australians• The CTQ was acceptable in this population and associated with other adverse childhood indicators, such as removal from family in childhood• Higher levels of childhood stress and adversity were associated with late-life emotional health (depression, anxiety/PTSD, suicide attempt), dementia and Alzheimer's disease• These results contribu te to a growing body of research suggesting adverse early life exposures increase dementia risk in older age.
