Direct costs of osteoporosis-related hip fractures: protocol for a cross-sectional analysis of a national database

Introduction It is estimated that Iran accounted for about 1% of hip fracture burden of the world in 2007, but these data are based on incomplete evidence. As the country’s population is ageing, it is expected that a dramatic rise in hip fracture incidence will result. There is no single national study that accurately estimates the incidence of all hip fractures in the country or identifies the direct costs for affected patients. To help fill this gap, the current study has been designed to determine the incidence of hip fracture associated with osteoporosis in the Iranian population and to assess the direct costs involved. Methods and analysis This is a cross-sectional analysis of 2 years of hospital admissions due to hip fracture in Iran from October 2014 to October 2016 using an electronic health record called SEPAS. SEPAS is a nationwide health information system established by Information Technology (IT) and the Statistics Department of the Ministry of Health. SEPAS has recorded more than 8.5 million inpatient hospitalizations since October 2014. Our study will identify reported hip fracture data in SEPAS among admitted adult hospital patients aged ≥50 in Iran. International Classification of Diseases ICD-9 and 10 will be used as diagnostic codes. Study factors are demographic data, types of fracture, types of treatment, duration of admission, early complications, in-hospital mortality and direct cost of fracture treatment. The accuracy of the SEPAS fracture da...

CONCLUSIONS: The expression of miR-373 is decreased in osteoporotic patients and rat models caused by estrogen deficiency, and it can promote the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into the osteogenic direction. This work provides a new direction and experimental basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. PMID: 31539111 [PubMed - in process]

Effect of GGCX on the differentiation function of osteoporosis bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells through regulating TGFβ/smad signaling pathway. Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2019 Sep;23(17):7224-7231 Authors: Wang QL, Li HF, Wang DP, Liu ZY, Xiao WW, Xu LL, Yu S Abstract OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis (OP) has a high incidence and can be found in multiple age groups. The bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have the potential for self-renewal and multi-directional differentiation, which are often used for investigating the differentiation function of osteoporosis bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. ...

AbstractRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disabling disease that is associated with increased localized and generalized osteoporosis (OP). Previous studies estimated that approximately one-third of the RA population experience bone loss. Moreover, RA patients suffer from a doubled fracture incidence depending on several clinical factors, such as disease severity, age, glucocorticoid (GC) use, and immobility. As OP fractures are related to impaired quality of life and increased mortality rates, OP has an enormous impact on global health status. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a holistic approach in daily clinica...

In conclusion, reducing miR-451a expression levels could enhance bone formation during the progression of osteoporosis, which might be at least partly via the meditation of Bmp6 expression.

Conclusion: Several health maintenance aspects are inadequately addressed by GIs and PCPs, in part because of conflicting perceptions of responsibility. Clear guidelines and better GI/PCP communication are required to ensure effective health maintenance for patients with IBD. PMID: 31528131 [PubMed]
