Molecular detection and characterization through analysis of the hexon and fiber genes of adenoviruses causing conjunctivitis in Tunisia, North Africa

In conclusion, this work reports molecular data on adenoviral conjunctivitis from a region where such information is scarce and contributes to a better knowledge of the worldwide distribution of causative genotypes. It revealed a predominance and endemic circulation of HAdV‐D8, a genotype that was mainly reported from epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. It shows that PCR amplification in two different genomic regions enhances the sensitivity of HAdV detection in clinical samples and the identification of minor genotypes. This study analyzed PCT and CRP levels of 214 pediatric patients with a median age of 8.5  years (0.4–17.8 years) undergoing allogeneic HSCT with respect to major TRAE.Results26 patients (12.1%) did not experience TRAE (control group), and 188 (87.9%) experienced median 2 (range 1 –4) TRAE. Median CRP and PCT were highly and significantly increased during sepsis/SIRS and bacteremia (17.24 mg/dl | 6.30 ng/ml;p

Publication date: Available online 18 October 2019Source: Preventive MedicineAuthor(s): Jack E. Henningfield, Judy B. Ashworth, Karen K. Gerlach, Bernie Simone, Sidney H. SchnollAbstractPain and addiction are complex disorders with many commonalities. Beneficial outcomes for both disorders can be achieved through similar principles such as individualized medication selection and dosing, comprehensive multi-modal therapies, and judicious modification of treatment as indicated by the patient's status. This is implicit in the term “medication assisted treatment” (MAT) for opioid use disorders (OUD), and is equally...

Conclusions: ivA was highly efficacious in this pediatric cohort. We observed episodes of mild to moderate posttreatment hemolysis in approximately one-third of patients. The legal status and usage of potentially lifesaving ivA should be evaluated in Europe.

Conclusions: This study showed that EV-positivity rate for our SARI series was 9%. The molecular detection and characterization of EVs allowed for the rapid detection of an EV-D68 outbreak and revealed the presence of emerging EV types that may pose a public health threat. The lack of routine screening and EV characterization in respiratory tract infections hampers the assessment of their epidemiologic and molecular features.

ConclusionsOur data reflect high rates of postvalve surgery morbidity and mortality in people with SUD-IE at a tertiary care center. The midterm postoperative period is a vulnerable period for people with SUD-IE worthy of further investigation.

In conclusion, the overall results present the molecular characterization of annexin B30, annexin B5a, annexin B7a and annexin B5b from S. mansoni in host-parasite interactions and strongly suggest that the molecules could be useful candidates for vaccine or diagnostic development.

In this study, we detected for just the second time a SINV infection in a diseased wild bird (common wood pigeon) from Central Europe. SINV was isolated by cell culture and the complete SINV genome sequence was determined. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a close affiliation to SINV genotype I with a high similarity to human isolate sequences from Finland, Sweden and Russia. The isolate was genetically distinct from the first avian isolate suggesting the circulation of at least two different SINV strains in Germany. In order to reveal the infection frequency in SINV positive mosquito regions 749 bird blood samples were assaye...

We present a novel kinetic Monte Carlo technique to study the susceptible-infected-removed model in order to simulate epidemic outbreaks on two quasiperiodic lattices, namely, Penrose and Ammann-Beenker. Our analysis around criticality is performed by investigating the order parameter, which is defined as the probability of growing a spanning cluster formed by removed sites, evolving from an initial system configuration with a single random chosen infective site. This system is studied by means of the cluster size distribution, obtained by the Newman-Ziff algorithm. Additionally, we obtained the mean cluster size, and a cu...

A landmark trial over the U.S. opioid epidemic is on track to begin on Monday after drug companies and local governments failed to agree on a settlement on Friday that had been expected to be valued at around $50 billion.
