“Theoretical benefits of dynamic collimation in pencil beam scanning proton therapy for brain tumor”

Pencil beam scanning proton therapy for brain treatments may suffer from poor dose distribution conformity due to the relatively large spot sizes of the low energy beams necessary for these treatments. Collimation is expected to improve the normal tissue sparing by reducing the effective spot size near the target periphery for each energy layer. Comparisons of collimated and un-collimated plans yielded a systematic improvement of the dose distribution conformity.
