Genetic Screening in Patients with Parkinson Disease and Deep Brain Stimulation

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-established therapy for select patients with Parkinson Disease (PD). To increase the odds of favorable outcomes following DBS surgery, a multidisciplinary clinical evaluation is recommended. However, outcomes can still vary. Large-scale studies assessing DBS outcomes of patients with genetic mutations are limited, but current evidence suggests variability in the outcomes of carriers of common mutations in genes such as LRRK2 or GBA. With the increased access to genetic studies, the role of genetic risk factors in predicting the outcomes of DBS surgery is yet to be defined.
