Profile of a Pioneer: Robert A. Good

Often referred to as the founder of modern immunology, Robert Alan Good, MD, PhD (Figure 1) was an exceptionally productive immunologist and gifted physician. His discoveries distinguished the lymphoid lineages responsible for cell-mediated and humoral immunity, and he played a seminal role in the science and application of allogeneic marrow transplantation for curative treatment of genetic and acquired diseases of immunity and hematopoiesis. He was born in Crosby, MN, the second of four sons of teacher parents.
