A Gentle Introduction to Latent Class Analysis for Researchers in Pediatrics

A recent study in The Journal of Pediatrics from O ’Connor et al reports using latent class analysis (LCA) to discover “complexity” subgroups based on cardiac medical histories of 1,482 participants diagnosed with congenital heart disease (CHD).1 Seven medical history variables (including stroke, cardiac surgeries, and cardiac-related hospital izations) were selected based on indications of CHD complexity. Applying LCA, investigators found four subgroups of complexity: mild, moderate 1, moderate 2, and severe.
