Reply to “The Role of Metformin in Overactive Bladder: More Studies Are Warranted”

We appreciate the interest in our recent study1 from Dr Jiang and colleagues. We agree that as a retrospective database study, we are limited in our ability to say with certainty that metformin use is linked to overactive bladder (OAB). What we can conclude is that in a large population of diabetics, those with a prescription for metformin were more likely to have a coinciding prescription for an OAB medication (aOR=1.07, 95% CI=1.03 –1.12). We chose to use OAB prescription as a surrogate for OAB diagnosis, as there is no available OAB code in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) that could be used as part of our data collection in the ICES-linked health administrative databases.
