Pain Management Among the Cognitively Impaired
Cognitive impairment affects over 55 million people worldwide each year (World Health Organization, 2024). Results from a longitudinal, nationally representative randomized sample of people 51 years and older finds that almost 10% of U.S. adults ages 65 and older have dementia, while another 22% have mild cognitive impairment (Manly et al., 2022). The Manly study further reveals that individuals with dementia and mild cognitive impairment are more likely to be older, have lower levels of education, and be Black or Hispanic.
