12-Hour Hypothermic Heart Preservation in a Pig Model

Purpose: Extending the heart preservation time using ex situ heart perfusion (ESHP) has been proposed as an optimal method to preserve donated hearts before transplantation. Hypothermic perfusion is a simple method from a device design perspective, and also has enhanced safety compared to normothermic perfusion in the event of device failure. However, the optimal temperature has yet to be determined. We sought to evaluate the effectiveness of 12-hour hypothermic machine perfusion using Belzer Machine Perfusion Solution (MPS) compared to cold static storage (CSS) for 6h followed by simulated transplantation.
