Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) has become the most utilized imaging modality for diagnosis and management of children and adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). It was not always this way. The history of echocardiography in pediatrics is interesting in that it was only in 1959 that Effert et al. first reported echocardiographic images of congenital heart defects, but the technology at the time could not consistently identify anatomical variations. 1, 2 It was another decade before echocardiography machines improved and normal neonatal and infant echocardiography images were able to be documented and expand the field of pediatric cardiology.
