The discovery of GGT1 as a novel gene for ischemic stroke conferring protection against disease risk in non-smokers and non-abusers of alcohol

According to the Global Stroke Factsheet 20221, the lifetime risk of developing stroke has increased by 50% in the last 17 years. Ischemic stroke is the most common stroke type caused by a thrombotic or embolic event that causes a decrease in blood flow to the brain, leading to hypoxia and necrosis of the brain tissue2,3. Increased death rates and long-term disability due to ischemic stroke in recent decades, especially in the working-age population4, require the improvement of existing methods for early diagnosis and treatment of patients with cerebrovascular disease and the implementation of effective primary prevention strategies focusing on the individual assessment of genetic and environmental risk factors5.
