Underlying parental infertility and offspring cardiometabolic risk

There remains long-standing interest in the health of children conceived with fertility treatments, particularly conception after the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). These concerns include the potential for epigenetic changes in early development (1). However, apart from issues of reproducibility, because the ART techniques have changed dramatically over the years, what has also been difficult to disentangle is the confounding due to underlying infertility. In other words, what causes infertility, rather than its treatment, may be what increases long-term health risks to the child.
