Identifying an Early Neuropathological Mechanism in Schizophrenia With Brain Organoids

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with a spectrum of debilitating symptoms that affects more than 1% of the global population. The pathophysiology and etiology of SCZ remains largely unknown due to the intricate interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Despite its typical onset during late adolescence or early adulthood, the neurodevelopmental hypothesis shed light on the origin of SCZ. It has been proposed that disruptions in early brain development by SCZ risk factors amplify an individual ’s susceptibility to SCZ (1).
