Cardiac Tamponade in ECMO: Infrequent but Important

We read with great interest a recent article in the journal.1 In it, the authors present the results of an analysis of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) database, exploring the complication of cardiac tamponade in adult patients (aged 18 years or older) supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) of the following types: cardiac, pulmonary, or extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (E-CPR).1 The study examines the association of baseline factors and other characteristics with the development of cardiac tamponade during ECMO support, as well as the association of cardiac tamponade with outcomes from 1997 until 2021.
