No benefit of vitamin D supplementation on muscle function and Health-Related Quality of Life in primary cardiovascular prevention patients with statin-associated muscle symptoms: a randomized controlled trial

Generally well tolerated, statin use is nevertheless associated with various side effects, notably statin associated muscular symptoms (SAMS). The vast majority of SAMS are mild muscle symptoms. They present typically as increased sensitivity to palpation, weakness, fatigue, aches, and/or cramps, and are almost always reported in large muscle groups (especially pectorals, quadriceps, biceps, and deltoids)1,2. These symptoms usually appear without elevated levels of circulating markers of muscle damage, such as creatine kinase (CK) or myoglobin (Mb), although in rare cases myopathy and rhabdomyolysis are observed3.
