Low-Dose Application of Ultrasound-Enhancing Agents Without Flush in Echocardiography: Prospective Experience From the Edmonton Cancer Registry
Ultrasound-enhancing agents (UEAs) are an integral aspect of echocardiography and allow for enhanced visualization of endocardial borders and improved diagnostic accuracy.1,2 While the risk for anaphylactoid reactions is rare (1:10,000), more common mild adverse reactions from UEAs have been reported.3 In clinical trials with perflutren lipid microbubbles (Definity), back pain or flank pain was reported in 0.6% to 6.2% of cases.4,5 The back/flank pain can be bothersome and was thought to be caused by a complement activation related pseudo allergy (CARPA).
