Bacterial infections predispose to the development of portal vein thrombosis in patients with decompensated cirrhosis
We read with interest the original article by Dalbeni et al., investigating the association between bacterial infections and portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis (1). They recruited 202 consecutive patients with cirrhosis without history of bacterial infections. Patients were prospectively followed for up to 5 years or until one of the following: d eath, transplant, TIPS, PVT, or start of anticoagulation. Any episode of bacterial infection requiring hospitalization during follow-up was collected.
