Safety and Efficacy of Colchicine for the Prevention of Pericarditis in Patients Who Underwent Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation

Acute pericarditis is common in patients who underwent catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) with a reported incidence of 0.5% to 10.2%.1 The underlying mechanism is believed to be an inflammatory reaction triggered by injury to the pericardial tissue during the ablation.2 Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug that has been evaluated in different studies for the prevention of pericarditis in patients who underwent catheter ablation for AF.2 –5 However, these studies have shown inconsistent and conflicting results likely related to small sample size and heterogeneous study end points.
