To be or NOD 2 be: The role of NOD2 in predisposing patients with cirrhosis towards infections

Cirrhosis is the end-stage of all chronic liver diseases, which still accounts for a large, annual number of deaths worldwide [1]. The development of ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, gastrointestinal bleeding or bacterial infection or their combination leads to acute decompensation (AD) in patients with liver cirrhosis. AD can result in organ failure defining the acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) with high mortality rate [2]. Strikingly, proven bacterial infection and/or severe acute alcoholic hepatitis are the most frequent precipitants.
