NHLBI Obesity, Nutrition, and Physical Activity Seminar: New Directions in Community-Based Interventions to Improve Food Access and Reduce Obesity in Baltimore

In this one-hour webinar, Dr. Joel Gittelsohn, Ph.D., will present his research and ideas on “ New Directions in Community-Based Interventions to Improve Food Access and Reduce Obesity in Baltimore. ” For more than 20 years, Dr. Gittelsohn and his colleagues have been developing, implementing and evaluating novel strategies to improve healthy food access in low income areas of Baltimore, including strategies in corner stores, supermarkets, carryout restaurants, recreation centers, food pantries and other venues that have shown success in increasing access, purchase and consumption of healthier foods. In today ’ s webinar, Dr. Gittelsohn will present his latest studies that address ongoing challenges of reach and sustainability with innovative strategies such as digital apps to support healthy food access in corner stores and food pantries, and simulation modeling to permit virtual testing of programs and policies for restaurants. Dr. Gittelsohn is a Professor in the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a leading public health nutritionist and medical anthropologist who focuses on the primary prevention of chronic disease in disadvantaged communities.
