Prevalence of Blood Group Antigens among regular blood donors: A single centre study from South India with a Review of national literature

A database of blood group phenotype of donors not only helps in timely provision of red cell components to required patients but also helps in understanding the phenotype frequencies of that population. Blood group antigen frequencies are not the same among all the populations. It varies across different regions as well as ethnic groups. The possibility of an individual developing an antibody after exposure to a red cell antigen which an individual lacks depends on various factors like age, immune status, disease state of the individual, immunogenicity of the antigen, duration of transfusion therapy, environmental factors etc.
